VDL Groep Prijs falls prey to Richard Vogel

Richard Vogel, with United Touch S, gave advance warning to his competition for next Sunday: the duo is in top form and feels at home in Den Bosch. The German rider says after his win in the VDL Groep Prize at 5* 1.55m level: ‘This audience gives a fantastic feeling and that gives an extra boost!’

Vogel visibly enjoyed the prize-giving ceremony in front of the frenzied stands. The rider says that the focus for him and United Touch S is on Sunday, but that the audience gave him extra motivation: ‘I couldn't resist going for the win. With such an electric atmosphere, you are really lifted to a higher level as a rider. Events like this are incredibly important for us, it gives us a boost and the chance to show people how beautiful our sport is. The Dutch Masters is an important event on our competition calendars. You can see that from the starting lists; all the big names are present.’ Vogel also praises Den Bosch's cosy and welcoming atmosphere, which he says almost feels like a living room. ‘Here you want to be in top form, bring your best horse and give everything.’

Credits to groom
Talking about his special bond with United Touch S, Vogel says: ‘We have come a long way together. We started inexperienced, went through our first Rolex Majors and championships. This is a very special relationship.’ He also gave high praise to his groom Felicia Wallin, who plays a crucial role in the care and training of United Touch S. ‘She stays with him when I am in Florida in the winter. He trusts her completely, she knows him inside out. Most of the credit goes to the home team.’

Top four finish within margin of three tenths
Richard Vogel did not make the most of his jump-off in his own words, but the polished ride was just enough to keep victory out of the hands of Peder Fredericson and Catch Me Not S. The Swede needed just six hundredths of a second more to clear the course. Belgium's Gilles Thomas and Ermitage Kalone then followed two tenths in third place, closely followed by Jur Vrieling and Clear Heart. Kim Emmen secured the second Dutch top-five result with her Imagine.
