Lillie Keenan wins spectacular Van Schijndel Bouwgroep Indoor Derby

To rhythmic applause and loud cheers from the audience, 15 top riders stormed through the Van Schijndel Bouwgroep Prize, one of the most spectacular classes of The Dutch Masters. This year, victory went to a newcomer to Den Bosch: American rider Lillie Keenan.
For Keenan, who is experiencing her first The Dutch Masters, the atmosphere and excitement surrounding the indoor derby was a positive surprise. ‘Yes, this was so much fun! Every Rolex Grand Slam is special, but this traditional indoor derby in Den Bosch is really unique. And how alive the people were! I am American, but they cheered for me just as hard as for the Dutch riders. A win in front of such an audience is really incredibly beautiful.’
Opium JW van de Moerhoeve TN impresses
For the class, Keenan saddled her 11-year-old stallion Opium JW van de Moerhoeve TN, with whom she has a close relationship, she says: ‘Opium is a horse for the highest tests, but I like to give him some variety to keep his work fun. We have ridden an outdoor derby before, but this was our debut in an indoor derby. Opium loved it! He eagerly looked where the next obstacle was. This tastes like more, I'm already looking forward to next year!’
Strong Dutch contribution
The Van Schijndel Bouwgroep Prize was led by riders. Mel Thijssen defended the Dutch tricolour with a sharp ride on Florida Balia NL. She thus relegated compatriot Tom Schellekens and his Interessant van de Zietfort to third place.
